Specimen Requirements

Collection Requirements

Acceptable Specimen Types: Plasma, Bronchoalveolar lavage or Pleural Fluid

Peripheral blood - Collect: 3.0 mL (minimum 2.0 mL) blood in Lavender (K2 EDTA). Separate plasma from whole blood within 36 hours of collection if samples are stored at 2-8°C or within 24 hours of collection if samples are stored at room temperature (up to 25°C).

Bronchoalveolar lavage: Unpreserved; collect 2-3 mL; if room temperature, specimen must arrive within 24 hours; if 2-8°C, specimen must arrive within 7 days. Pleural Fluid: Collect 2-3 mL, unpreserved. Do not centrifuge; if room temperature, specimen must arrive within 24 hours; if 2-8°C, specimen must arrive within 7 days.

Transport Temperature

Processed specimen: Send plasma refrigerated with cold pack or frozen with dry ice.

Specimen Stability

Plasma may be stored at 2-8°C for up to 7 days or up to 6 weeks if stored at ≤ -20°C.

Rejection Criteria

 

1.) Specimens >7 days refrigerated

2.) >24 hours room temp

3.) Specimen with excessive blood contamination will be rejected.
